Writer / Editor
Leah Fabel started her career as a high school history teacher in Chicago, where she also coached cross-country and basketball. After making a shift to journalism in 2007, she spent four years covering schools in the Washington, D.C. area, for the D.C. Examiner, before becoming a features writer and editor for One Day magazine. At both publications, she reported on the deep injustices facing America’s students as well as the remarkable kids, parents, school leaders, teachers, and communities improving kids’ outcomes and fueling their hopes. She and her husband, who is also an education journalist, live in St. Paul, Minnesota with their sons, ages 11 and 7. In 2021, Leah made a career shift to part-time freelancing and part-time “Peace Guide,” working with kids at a nearby school to solve conflicts and develop confidence. She loves reading, hiking, gardening, playing games indoor and out, and trying to make as many meals as possible without another trip to the grocery store.
